Overseas Domestic Workers: Key case timeline

This International Domestic Workers week, we’ve compiled a timeline of the key cases that have impacted the rights and protections of overseas domestic workers.

All of these cases, except for Basfar v Wong in 2022 were conducted by ATLEU lawyers. And all of our clients were on the 1998 visa which put them in a stronger position to bring a claim and improve the law.

However, the timeline shows that after 27 years of campaigning and legal work, migrant domestic workers now enjoy less rights than they had in 1998.

We renew our calls to the UK government to listen to the voices of migrant domestic workers and reinstate their right to escape abuse by switching employers.
